Opening day

Opening day

Since I was a kid I loved opening day of fishing season. I’m not sure why the day is so magical, by the time May rolls around I’ve usually been Salmon fishing a few times on Lake Superior and walleye fishing on the local rivers and Green Bay. Still every year I’m like a kid again tossing and turning waiting for the alarm to go off.

Living in the north woods hasn’t done much for my condition. The Friday before season the town of Phillips comes alive with people. It’s nice to see after a quite month or so since the end of snowmobiling and ice fishing. The local businesses and charity groups get in on the action with special promotions, bake sales and live music, it’s like the whole town is coming out of hibernation.

This opening day found me in one of my early morning shore spots by 4:30 A.M.. These days if I can’t sleep I just get up and go fishing, but an early spring has the walleyes in a post spawn pattern and not as plentiful as usual, so its on to plan B. After a quick...

My Brother in law called last Wednesday and said he heard of a good walleye bite in the lower part of Green Bay. We made plans to meet Friday morning and go check it out.

Anyone who has ever fished Green bay for walleye know’s that you have be versatile. Fish roam the flats of the lower bay after they come out of the rivers, and the bite can be fabulous but unpredictable, with the fish moving shallower or deeper depending on weather , water clarity and boat traffic. So just because they were in eight feet of water on a break line yesterday doesn’t necessarily mean they will be there tomorrow.

The weather was perfect for a shallow water bite with a nice chop, but there were also a lot of boats working the same area we were. We started the day trolling crank baits in six feet of water. This had been the pattern, but after a few hours of no fish we started changing things. We started by putting the baits back farther getting them closer to the bottom ( you have to be careful doing this because the zebra...

My wife Laura and I made the first of many spring trips to Saxon harbor to fish for Coho’s, for those of you who do not know Saxon harbor is located on the Wisconsin - Michigan border of lake Superior. This little harbor like many on lake Superior offers great near shore fishing without the crowds of people.

The weather was perfect with a light south wind, calm water conditions. This is the earliest that I’ve been on lake Superior in a boat and the water temps were still a little cold 37 degrees.

The fish are still scattered , but we still managed to catch four Coho’s and lost three others in five hours of trolling stick baits.

We will be heading back up tomorrow to try again, then to Green Bay on Friday for walleye’s

Good luck

My name is Brian Tremel. I'm a Millwright by trade. I also own Northwoods Tackle and Musky Nuts Guide service. Being a guide and lure manufacturer gives me the opportunity for plenty of time on the water.

I have fished for musky my whole life ,catching my first over thirty years ago on Cresent lake in Rhinelander,WI. But the musky bug never bit me as hard as it did when we moved to Phillips,Wi. With plenty of prime musky waters within minutes of our home and a group of local musky addicts to help fuel the fire, I became obsessed.

While I still enjoy fishing the spring trout and salmon runs on lake Superior, Early season walleye and crappies on local lakes and rivers, once musky season opens that's it for me.

What I will try to do with this blog is to write a journal of my season. Starting shortly  with spring trolling for salmon and trout( I will get to try the new teaser leaders for coho). Then some river walleye fishing, Early season crappies, Then a bunch of musky fishing. I will pass along information on any tackle, tactics. locations, and interesting people I meet along the way.
