Opening day

Since I was a kid I loved opening day of fishing season. I’m not sure why the day is so magical, by the time May rolls around I’ve usually been Salmon fishing a few times on Lake Superior and walleye fishing on the local rivers and Green Bay. Still every year I’m like a kid again tossing and turning waiting for the alarm to go off.

Living in the north woods hasn’t done much for my condition. The Friday before season the town of Phillips comes alive with people. Fish roam the flats of the lower bay after they come out of the rivers, and the bite can be fabulous but unpredictable, with the fish moving shallower or deeper depending on weather , water clarity and boat traffic. So just because they were...

My wife Laura and I made the first of many spring trips to Saxon harbor to fish for Coho’s, for those of you who do not know Saxon harbor is located on the Wisconsin - Michigan border of lake Superior. This little harbor like many on lake Superior offers great near shore fishing without the crowds of people.

The weather was perfect with a light south wind, calm water conditions. This is the earliest that I’ve been on lake Superior in a boat and the water temps were still a little cold 37 degrees.
